RESEARCH

ICELANDIC LICHEN SYRUP in Republic of Croatia

Approved drug

The synopsis of the presentation "Icelandic lichen syrup, from magisterial preparation to the finished drug", held by M. Vrsalović, Trešnjevka laboratorij d.o.o., on the occasion of the II. Pharmaceutical Conference: "Pharmaceutical profession in Croatian public health", Varaždinske toplice, May 10 – 12, 2007.

Several products of Islandic lichen syrups exist on the Croatian market. The aim of the present research has been a comparative analysis of several syrup samples with the Islandic lichen syrup of Trešnjevka laboratorij. Apart from the syrup of Trešnjevka laboratorij, three another syrups of other manufacturers were chosen.

An adapted pharmacopeia method – thin layer chromatography – was used for the identification of the one of the most important active components – the fumarprotocetraric acid.

Different formulations were compared qualitatively and quantitatively.

Results are given in the following tabular survey along with the results of thin layer chromatography.

CONCLUSION

The described research has shown that the active constituent – the fumarprotocetraric acid has been identified only in the Icelandic lichen syrup of Trešnjevka laboratorij.

The measured pH value of Trešnjevka laboratorij syrup is the result of adequate quantitative extraction of Islandic lichen. The pH parameters of other compared syrups are unknown.

Besides, the superiority over other syrups of the competition lies in the fact that Icelandic lichen syrup of Trešnjevka laboratorij has been approved as a drug which means that it is subjected to strict quality control criteria for raw materials, production process and the finished product.
